There is enough traffic and pedestrian activity to justify a traffic light at the intersection of 72 Avenue and 196 Street, where an 11-year-old boy was hit by a car in November.
A Dec. 1 survey by the Township of 91原创 engineering division found the traffic through the intersection was running at 95 per cent of the level that would justify a light under the Transportation Association of Canada Traffic Signal Warrant procedure.
In a Dec. 16 report to council, the engineering division said Township staff have asked the City of Surrey, which shares responsibility for the intersection on the border between the two communities, to install the light and make other improvements 鈥渁s soon as possible.鈥�
The Township share of a traffic light would be $125,000 and the money is available from a miscellaneous roads account, the report stated.
It is a victory for local residents who signed a 160-name petition calling for safety improvements to the intersection after the 11-year-old suffered a mild concussion when he was clipped by a car that fled the scene.
RCMP said the boy was rollerblading with a friend. Neither was wearing a helmet and it was dark.
There are no crosswalks between 192 and 200 Streets.
In April, a 19-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when she was struck in a hit-and-run crash in the 19700 block of 72 Avenue.
The driver left her lying on the side of the road.
Her boyfriend was walking home and heard her cries for help, saw that it was his girlfriend and called 911.
Petition organizer Gary Hee called the intersection a 鈥渟uicidal corner of town.鈥�
The engineering report notes 196 Street and 72 Avenue are both designated as major arterial roads.
鈥淒ue to significant development activity in the area, both routes are actively used by construction truck traffic to access local destinations, as permitted by [law].鈥�
