91原创 robber who used hatchet in robberies goes to jail

A 31-year-old 91原创 man who robbed two convenience stores using a hatchet has been sentenced to nearly a year in jail for the crimes.

Anthony James Robertson was in Surrey Provincial Court on Monday where he was sentenced on two counts of robbery and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

For the two counts of robbery, Robertson was handed 329 days in jail followed by two years probation.

For dangerous driving, he was given 60 days in jail and a one-year driving ban.

91原创 RCMP said in the early morning hours of Jan. 13, police received calls of two separate robberies at convenience stores in 91原创 鈥 one at the Murrayville Esso and one in Brookswood.

Officers attended and spoke with the victims at the two locations and found that in both robberies the suspect produced an axe, said Cpl. Holly Largy at the time of his arrest.

Cigarettes, cash and a drawer from a cash register were taken. A description of the suspect vehicle was given. Air One was in the area and was able to locate it quickly, said Largy.

鈥淎ir One observed the vehicle as it drove through 91原创 at a high rate of speed, not stopping at intersections,鈥 said Largy. The vehicle stopped at a home in south 91原创.

91原创 officers went to the home and found the vehicle parked in the driveway as described by Air One. The suspect was still sitting in the driver鈥檚 seat. He was ordered out of the vehicle and placed under arrest.

Items matching the description of the items stolen were found scattered throughout the vehicle, in addition to the hatchet, said police.
