It is not the dog days of summer for staff at the Patti Dale animal shelter 鈥 far from it.

The 91原创 facility has found itself overwhelmed with cats, dogs, kittens and even puppies.

鈥淚n response to having a larger than normal number of dogs and cats in our care 鈥 with more than 100 鈥 we are hosting our first ever Adoption Extravaganza 鈥 鈥淎 Summer Fur Fest鈥 this Saturday, Aug 12 from 11 a.m. 鈥 4 p.m.,鈥 said LAPS executive director Jayne Nelson.

鈥淲e will have dogs, including a litter of puppies, adult cats and plenty of kittens either available for viewing or for adoption on Saturday.

鈥淭he puppies and some of the kittens will only be available for viewing and not adoption on the day but we will be accepting applications.鈥

The number of cats and kittens is at about normal for this time of year, said Nelson.

But it is the number of dogs they have in care that is unusual.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had a tremendous amount of surrenders where people were unable to continue care for their pet for whatever reason. We are glad to be here to be able to take those dogs. But we now have 32 dogs in care, which is very unusual. I can鈥檛 remember a time we鈥檝e had so many.鈥

Normally, LAPS has a 92 per cent return to owner rate, where stray and found dogs are brought to the shelter but then picked up by their owners, she explained.

In total, they have 110 animals in their care, 78 of them being cats and kittens.

鈥淲e have five litters of kittens and seven puppies and boy, are those puppies stinking adorable,鈥 said Nelson, who added that people can watch the pups on their livestream.

With the dogs available for adoption, interested people won鈥檛 be able to take them home on Saturday because of the training program new owners and dogs are required to go through.

Nelson added that with their older dogs, LAPS make sure all the animal鈥檚 medical issues, if any, are taken care of before it is adopted out.

鈥淪o all the people have to do is adopt them and love them,鈥 she said.

On Saturday, they will have plenty of staff and volunteers on hand to show people to the animals and answer any questions people have.

There is also a grand prize up for grabs.

Plenty of local pet stores will be on hand with donations and samples.

鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be a great day,鈥 Nelson said.

They are encouraging people to pre-register by filling out and submitting adoption .
