Fire engulfs Cloverdale home, no one hurt

Surrey Fire trucks shuttled water in to fight Friday night blaze

A fire destroyed a two-storey home on a farm property in Cloverdale late Friday (Sept. 20).

Surrey Fire crews responded to a fire in the 5200 block of 164 Ave around 10 p.m., Surrey Fire Service assistant chief Greg McRobbie said.

When fire crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames. McRobbie added that no one was home at the time of the fire.

Seven fire trucks and 28 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire.

"They fought the fire from the exterior due to a partial wall collapse on the south side of the home," he said. "So when crews started the operation, it became a defensive attack right away, and all that really means is that we were not putting anyone inside because of the wall collapse, just being unsafe conditions."

The fire was located in an area Surrey Fire calls a "no water district," where there is no fire hydrant within 1000 feet.

In these districts, fire crews do what they call a tender shuttle to bring in water. Five water trucks were used to shuttle water to the fire, McRobbie said.

Police did not hold the scene, McRobbie said.
