The killing of a 61-year-old man in Stanley Park last winter appears to be random but premeditated, Vancouver Police told reporters at a press conference Wednesday.
Tyler Lagimodiere was arrested and charged Monday with first-degree murder in the death of Lubomir 鈥淟ubo鈥� Kunik.
Kunik was found suffering from fatal stab wounds on the Stanley Park seawall on Feb. 1, 2017.
鈥淢r. Lagimodiere and Mr. Kunik did not know each other and as far as the evidence we have, had never met each other before this incident,鈥� Supt. Mike Porteous said.
鈥淗owever, investigators were able to find a forensic link between the evidence found at the crime scene and the accused party.鈥�
Porteous said that although victim and accused do not appear to know each other, a 鈥渃onstellation of evidence鈥� encompassing Lagimodiere鈥檚 motives, background and movements led police to believe the attack was premeditated.
Police have found no links between the attack on Kunik and other attack in the area, in Stanley Park in late 2016.
Porteous described 29-year-old Lagimodiere, who grew up in East Vancouver as having had 鈥渁 challenging life鈥� that has resulted in multiple run-ins with police.
Lagimodiere faces one count of first-degree murder, and made his first appearance at provincial court in Vancouver Monday.
He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 17.
