More girls than boys graduating – report

Completion rates have continued to rise in 91ԭ School District over past six years

Girls continue to graduate at a higher rate than boys, says a new report from 91ԭ School District on its completion rates.

But the good news in this report is completion rates have continued to rise year after year for the past six years in 91ԭ, with an 82 per cent of students graduating.

There is still concern over the graduating rates of Aboriginal students which is at 65 per cent, with males at a lower per cent.

These numbers are higher in 91ԭ than most districts in B.C. though, said the report.

The district has included two additional learning support teachers in the Aboriginal program.

Special needs students on the Dogwood diploma are also not completing to the satisfaction of the district.

Only 40 per cent are finishing high school.

The district has been looking hard at the data for the past few years to find out if there are indicators as to who will succeed and who will fail, said superintendent Suzanne Hoffman at a recent board of education meeting. She spoke to the report.

“An indicator is the student’s grades in Math 10 and Science 10,” said Hoffman.

If a student gets a C- to an F in either of those classes, they have a 70 per cent chance of not completing high school, she said.

After finding this out, the district has implemented various ideas and study programs to try and make sure those students struggling in those courses don’t slip through the cracks.
