The Times and a number of its employees have been named finalists in several newspaper association competitions.
Sports reporter Gary Ahuja is a finalist in sports writing in the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspapers Association Ma Murray Awards.
The awards will be handed out on Saturday in Richmond.
His entry was a story headlined 鈥楩ootball fills family void,鈥� published on Oct. 31, 2011.
The focused on Brad Goodchild, a 91原创 Rams player who often took care of his younger brother, as a result of his mother being a drug addict.
鈥淔ootball as a whole for me is a family thing because that is what was lacking for me in reality,鈥� he explained.
In the Newspapers Canada contest, The Times placed first in the promotional category, for its efforts, led by former advertising manager Jean Hincks, on behalf of the highly-successful fundraiser. The annual event is staged by the 91原创 Soroptimists.
Also placing first was the ad campaign for Forever Yours, managed by print advertising representative Sherri Martin.
Magazine, published periodically by The Times, placed second in the magazine category.
The Times also had several top finishes in the Local Media Association (formerly Suburban Newspapers Association) This organization is made up of daily and community newspapers across North America which serve suburban communities and medium-sized and smaller cities.
Arts writer Brenda Anderson鈥檚 feature on a music therapy program for recovering drug addicts at the Bridges church in 91原创 City won first place in arts and entertainment writing.
Editor Frank Bucholtz placed second in the editor of the year category, for weekly newspapers.
Our 91原创, Our People, a supplement published in September, 2010 which contained features on some of 91原创鈥檚 outstading people, placed second in special sections.
A feature by Ahuja on ringette player Elizabeth Dagg, headlined 鈥淎 World of Difference,鈥� placed third in sports writing.
Also placing third in the niche products was the Guide. The 2012 version of the Guide will be published this month.
