UPDATE: Firefighters, helicopter fight Pitt Meadows interface fire

Blaze started Thursday evening, crews continue containment Friday

Firefighters from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, with personnel from the B.C. Wildfire Service, are battling a fire in Pitt Meadows that started on Thursday evening, July 31.

They remain on scene on Friday morning to continue containment efforts, and smoke was still visible as of 8:15 a.m.

The fire started at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the back of a property in the 200 block of Richardson Road. It is an interface fire, with residences close to the forested area that was burning, but firefighters say no structures are at risk.

The residents of the impacted property, and of another house, were evacuated. Firefighters attacked the blaze with hoses from the ground, and a helicopter with a bucket doused the blaze from the air.

At the height of the fire there was significant smoke visible from Harris and Neaves Roads, with a large amount of flame on the slope of the hill, and the property owner described it as having the potential to become a wildfire. Other residents on Richardson Road were told by fire personnel to be ready to evacuate.

By 9:30 p.m. the fire was reportedly under control, and the property owners were told they could return to their residence.

There were no reports of injuries to people or animals.

鈥淲e鈥檙e grateful for the swift and coordinated response of our fire crews and partner agencies,鈥 said Mayor Nicole MacDonald. 鈥淧ublic safety is our top priority, and we鈥檙e asking everyone to please avoid the area to allow emergency teams to do their work safely and effectively.鈥

The cause of the fire is not known.
