Several thousand people found their home or business in the dark on the morning of Monday, Oct. 24 after a power failure hit during the morning rush hour.
According to BC Hydro, power went out for 4,426 customers at 8:07 a.m.
Street lights were out on parts of Fraser Highway, slowing traffic.
BC Hydro crews estimated the entire outage would be repaired by about 4 p.m., and by late morning, some of the affected area had seen power restored, but a core area in the downtown was still without electricity.
The power failure also caused Canada Post to send out a 鈥渞ed delivery service alert鈥� message.
Because the local Canada Post mail processing and delivering facility lost power, the posties had to suspend delivery for the day.
鈥淲hile we are monitoring the situation and working on contingency plans to restore or maintain postal services, customers in 91原创 with postal codes starting with the following characters will not be receiving mail delivery: V3A and V2Y,鈥� Canada Post said in an announcement.
At its largest, the outage covered an area starting near Fraser Highway and 190th Street in Surrey, as far east as 206th Street, south to Grade Crescent, and north as far as 64th Avenue.
