A delegation of South Yorkson residents has won a Christmas gift of parking from 91原创 Township council.

Council agreed to ease parking ticket-writing for the area during the holiday season after four residents, speaking for different neighbourhoods within Yorkson, complained a lack of legal parking spaces makes it hard to have visitors.

Manuel Levy said an 鈥渆xtreme lack of parking鈥 exists in the area near 80 Avenue and 201 Street.

Guests have to park as far as half a kilometre away from his house to find a legal spot, Levy said.

The problem has become severe because about 150 roadside parking spaces on three different streets designated as major 鈥渁rterial鈥 roads were recently eliminated by the Township, including spaces along a four-lane-wide stretch of 80 avenue.

鈥淭hose 150 cars didn鈥檛 disappear鈥 Michael Coombs said.

鈥淧eople have nowhere to go.鈥

The residents said there isn鈥檛 enough traffic to justify four lanes, two of which could be used for parking, and the freeway-wide roadway is encouraging drivers to speed through the residential area.

Ashish Kapoor said he鈥檚 given up inviting relatives to birthday parties for his son because there are only 10 parking spaces available for the 45 homes in his immediate neighbourhood.

As a temporary solution, councillor Kim Richter convinced the rest of council to order a temporary lifting of roadside parking restrictions in the area, as long as no safety regulations are broken 鈥渟o residents can have their family and friends visit.鈥

Township staff have been ordered to examine longer-term solutions.
