91原创 City school trustee Stacey Cody is seeking a third term on Nov. 19. She is seeking one of the two City seats on the 91原创 Board of Education.
She says the public needs to elect trustees who will focus on student success, not political gamesmanship.
鈥淚 get quite emotional about this. It鈥檚 embarrassing that the B.C. Auditor-General had to come into 91原创 to instruct trustees on how to get along with each other. That shouldn鈥檛 be necessary. We must do better. Serving as a trustee should be about students and families, not personal one-upmanship,鈥� says Cody.
鈥淲e have limited resources. All of our energy must go into doing the best we can to build and improve public education, because education is the foundation of both a strong economy where our children can succeed, and a healthy, democratic society. We must never lose sight of that common goal. And that means we must all work together 鈥� teachers, parents, trustees and staff 鈥� to do our best for 91原创 students.鈥�
Cody has been active in the B.C. School Trustees Association (BCSTA), which represents trustees province-wide. She has recently been elected by her peers in other school districts as president of the BCSTA鈥檚 Fraser Valley Branch, and previously served for two years as vice-president. Both are unpaid volunteer positions.
鈥淭he BCSTA is an important vehicle to improve education, not only in 91原创, but in every community in B.C. By working together through the BCSTA, trustees are able to bring forward their ideas on education policies, and present them to government with a unified voice,鈥� says Cody.
At the community level, she has participated on many boards, committees and projects to enhance and advocate for early literacy, public education, youth at risk, and measures to address homelessness. She has also served as the Board of Education鈥檚 representative on the 91原创 City Advisory Planning Commission, the Parks and Recreation Board, and the Recreation, Culture and Public Art Advisory Committee.
鈥淏eing a trustee is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to our community. I am asking for voters鈥� support to continue that work 鈥� with hope, determination and love 鈥� to make 91原创 an even better place for our children and grandchildren to grow, learn and succeed,鈥� she says.
Cody has been a resident of 91原创 for 18 years, moving here from Nova Scotia. She is the mother of one daughter, who is in her 12th year in 91原创 public schools.
