The 91原创 Field Naturalists are calling the Walkabout on Brydon Lagoon a success.
Almost 50 people attended, including 91原创 City staff, elected officials, election candidates in the upcoming civic election, and members of the public.
Also in attendance were representatives from the 91原创 Environmental Partners Society and Nicomekl Enhancement Society.
The walkabout was intended to familiarize 91原创 City staff and council with the lagoon芒鈧劉s current state.
All present agreed there was a need for Brydon Lagoon to be revitalized, but offered few suggestions on how it could be achieved.
On the August long weekend, high water temperatures caused a large fish kill in the lagoon. The failure of a second pump, which was not designed to provide aeration to the lagoon, was considered a factor in the fish kill.
A motion stemming from the September meeting of the Parks and Environment Advisory Committee (PEAC), to create a task force of stakeholders to seek solutions to the problems with Brydon Lagoon, was narrowly passed.
An amendment to the motion included terms of reference, and also directed the task force to bring its findings directly to council.
Brydon Lagoon is home to numerous bird species and waterfowl. A former sewerage lagoon, it is now noted as a sanctuary for migratory birds by Ducks Unlimited.
It has become a popular spot for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.
