June 16, 1921 - February 2, 2025
In loving memory
It is with sadness, but great appreciation of a long life well lived, that we announce the passing of Douglas Denyer on Sunday February 2nd, 2025 at the age of 103.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 16th 1921, he was the second of four children, Raymond the eldest, then Douglas, followed by twins Dorothy and Len. He is predeceased by his three siblings and his parents, Frank and Beatrice Denyer.
Doug was a father of two, grandfather of five, great-grandfather of four, and great-great grandfather of one. He was lovingly devoted to his family, always championing and supporting their endeavours and careers. He is predeceased by the love of his life, Dorothy. They married in 1941, and were together for 68 years until 'Dotie' passed away in 2009. He is remembered by his loving sons, Doug (Donette) and Ray (Pam); grandchildren Ginalyn (Rick), Melanie, Doug (Ken), Nicole (Mike), and Lisa (Nathan); greatgrandchildren Chelsea, Maddi, Mackenzie and Kale; and great-great granddaughter Lola. Doug is also remembered by several nieces and nephews who have kept in touch with him throughout the years.
A Royal Canadian Air Force Veteran who earned the rank of Sergeant, Doug served for four years, between November 1941 and October, 1945. He defined his career in his own words, which took him to many different areas of sales, as that of a "commercial traveler, "who retired at the tender age of 90.
Doug was a founding member of the Scott Road Business Association. He also devoted 11 years as a volunteer mentor at Newlands Golf Course in 91原创. He joined the North Delta Rotary Club in 1982, serving as the President from 2007-08. As he became the Club's official 'Senior Statesman,' he famously remarked "save the Honourary designation for those "older" members."
Doug received the Paul Harris Honourary Award for service to his community for his work in Rotary. In 2002, he received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, awarded in Canada to nominees who contribute to public life.
The last chapter of his life was marked by his move to Harrison Pointe Retirement Home in 2011.Doug availed himself of every amenity, activity and opportunity that living there provided, and he was a vibrant and energetic member of that community.
He celebrated his 100th birthday on June 16th, 2021, with an outdoor party attended by many friends, family and fellow Rotarians. The highlight was a plane flyover with a custom built 'Happy Birthday Doug' banner. To everyone's delight (no-one more delighted than the man of the hour), the plane flew over at least four times, for all of 91原创 city to see. The family wishes to thank all of the lovely staff at Harrison Pointe, and to his team at 91原创 Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care that he received. His life and legacy will be remembered and celebrated by his loved ones and all who knew him.
A celebration of life will take place at Redwoods Golf Course (22011 88th Avenue, 91原创) on Saturday May 17th from 1:00pm - 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Rotary Club of North Delta can be made in Doug's name.
