April 25, 1944 - November 1, 2019
We are sad to announce the death of Glenn Earl Howes at his home in White Rock BC, on November 1, 2019. Glenn lived life fully and joyfully for 75 years. He is mourned by his partner of 21 years, Cheryl MacIntosh; his son, Charles (Brenda); grand-daughters, Lisa and Laura; brother, Brian (Barbara), sisters Lorraine Krauss and Priscilla (Joe) McLaughlin; former wife, Barbara; and many cousins and extended family. Glenn was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Olive (Hale) Howes.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions we could not celebrate Glenn as he deserved. We will honour him by living a full life, supporting each other, and contributing to our communities.
Glenn grew up on the family farm near Lemsford, Saskatchewan and spent his summers working there, even after his family moved to Calgary. He graduated from Calgary's William Aberhart High School in 1962. He attended the University of Alberta, Calgary and the University of Alberta, graduating with a BSc in mechanical engineering in 1966.
Following graduation, Glenn worked for Boeing in Seattle. There he met and married Barbara Walsh Neufeld. Their son Charles was born in 1969. In 1970, the family moved to the Lemsford farm which Glenn ran for two summers. During the winters, he attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and received an MBA in 1972.
Glenn and family moved to the lower mainland of British Columbia and worked for Forano Steel and Edge Manufacturing. In 1977, Glenn started Edem Steel, designing and manufacturing vibratory conveyors for foundries and sawmills. Using resonance, these innovative conveyors required less power and maintenance, and provided greater flexibility than traditional conveyors.
Glenn was divorced in 1980 and moved with Charles to Crescent Beach. He was a scout leader and a trainer with the White Rock Sailing Co-op. Glenn sold his company in 1996 and retired to a 5-acre farm in Glen Valley. He participated in hockey, softball, sailing, and paddling, and enjoyed a robust game of Bridge.
In 1998, Glenn met Cheryl MacIntosh who became his partner and wife. She shared his interests and brought him joy. They travelled widely, with sailing a part of most trips. They volunteered together for many organizations: Lower Mainland Yacht Co-op in White Rock, 91原创 Environmental Partners, Fort 91原创 Canoe Club, Derby Reach Brae Island Parks Association, and Glen Valley Watersheds Society.
This active pair jointly received the 2013 John and Muriel Arnason Volunteer Award from the Township of 91原创 and the 2017 volunteer appreciation award from the Fort 91原创 Canoe Club. After Glenn's death, the Township of 91原创 planted a tree in Williams Park in appreciation for his volunteer work and community commitment.
Glenn enjoyed a good laugh, good food, and a good visit. He was inventive, creative, and always willing to help others. Glenn was a proud father, father-in-law, and grandfather, and was delighted to be called Grandpa Glenn. Glenn was always learning, with interests ranging from sports, politics, and current events to geothermal energy, which he incorporated into the house he and Cheryl designed and built in White Rock, overlooking the pier and Semiahmoo Bay.
Donations in Glenn's memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, #110 - 1525 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, ON K1Z 8R9 (website: https://www.heartandstroke.ca)
