Hugh Chesley

As told by his wife, Eleanor Chesley: "Hugh was born in 1927 in a wagon on the way to the Hospital near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the youngest of nine. When he was two, he moved to a homestead in Shipman, Saskatchewan. His mother was the first female in the area and was instrumental in getting a school and a church for her children. Hugh attended a one room school to Grade 8. When he was ten, he sold Christmas cards and garden seeds to help support the family. He won an award as top seed seller for the Western Provinces. Now, he got his high school by correspondence and played the guitar and harmonica and sang with a dance band. When he was 15, Hugh got his driver's license since the war was on and they needed drivers and he drove logging truck for his brother. Later he drove bus for Prince Albert Bus Lines to Big River. When he was 18, he went to Ontario to work for Kimberly Clarke in a pulp mill, where he eventually got his pulp and paper Engineering Degree. ln 1948, Hugh married Mary Cavanaugh, in Terrace Bay, Ontario. They had three children, Gregory John, born in 1949, Norma Ellen, born January 1952, and Kelley Ann Marie, 1960 in Toronto. His love of politics brought him into the Young Liberal circle, becoming campaign manager for C.D. Howe, a prominent Member of Parliament and Minister of Agriculture at the time. With his second wife Patricia McGowan, Hugh worked in Nova Scotia, Mexico, Egypt and South America as maintenance supervisors in pulp and paper mills. They had two more daughters, Leigh Arden, born in Brazil and Carmen in Vancouver. Back in Canada, Hugh managed the BC Wharf in Vancouver and dabbled in politics, running for the Leadership of the BC Liberal Party in the 80's. With wife Louise Parker, Hugh settled in the countryside near Aldergrove, where Louise taught school, was an avid horse woman and Hugh formed a construction company. Hugh spoke many languages fluently, was interested in current affairs and sports, especially baseball. He really had an amazing intellect, an aptitude for music and collecting unique objects." His final years, with numerous health issues, Hugh found support and companionship with the Mormon Church. He married his childhood friend Eleanor McGowan in 2009 and resided comfortably in Walnut Grove.
