Iris Mooney

Iris Mooney, a long time 91原创, BC resident, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Wednesday, July 19th at the Sidney All Care Residential Care Home, in Sidney, BC, where she had resided for just over two years, due to failing health and to be closer to immediate family. Iris was a nurse at the 91原创 Memorial Hospital, where she was a fixture for nearly forty years in charge of the maternity department. During her retirement function in 1985 it was stated that during her tenure in maternity she had delivered, helped deliver and had in her care somewhere in excess of 20,000 babies, at the time eclipsing the population of 91原创 City. 91原创 was home to Iris for nearly 70 years and she was extremely passionate about the community. Iris was elected as the first ever woman to the 91原创 City Council, where she served for many years. She was a devout member of the Sharon United Church in Murrayville and worked tirelessly for organizations such as the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, the 91原创 Christmas Bureau and the 91原创 Memorial Hospital Foundation. Iris was recognized for her various community efforts by way of being bestowed with numerous accolades, including 鈥淐itizen of the Year鈥�, having a park named in her honour, 鈥淲oman of the Year鈥� and 鈥淪enior Citizen of the Year鈥�. Iris will be sorrowfully missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her son Charlie, daughter-in-law Dawn, grandchildren Megan and Matthew, sister Jean Seymour and her many nieces and nephews. Iris is predeceased by her husband Doug, sister Verna and brothers Bob and Dave. A Celebration of Life is planned for 1:00 PM, August 29, 2017 at the United Churches of 91原创, located in Murrayville at 21562 Old Yale Road, 91原创, BC.
