Dix's approach to education issues applauded

We have the equivalent of $3 billion less in the system than when the BC Liberals were elected. Is that better for kids?

Editor: Re: BCTF contract of 1990s hints at Dix policy (, The Times, July 10.)

Taylor made a statement that 鈥淒ix helped orchestrate a notoriously one-side 鈥渟weetheart鈥 deal with the BCTF.鈥

One-sided, in what way? Do you mean a deal that actually brought something to the table that was of benefit to kids, a deal that dealt with the learning conditions of the children?

Surely he is not suggesting that a deal that brought lower class sizes and guaranteed services for students with special needs would not be a deal that trustees should agree with.  And surely they shouldn鈥檛 object to $1.3 billion being injected into the education system to provide those much needed services.

I realize that trustees did not vote to ratify that agreement, but that seemed more a matter of crushed pride, in that they felt 鈥渄issed鈥 by government who bypassed them at the eleventh hour, rather than a situation where they were voting for what was of benefit to the students.

Now we have a situation where we have the equivalent of $3 billion less in the system than when the BC Liberals were elected. Is that better for kids? I would take Dix鈥檚 contribution to the education of our children any day.
