LETTER: Canada needs to be world's peacemonger

Dear Editor,

Canada is not a warmongering nation!

Tread carefully with the history of what Canada鈥檚 vision has been.

Canada鈥檚 strongest military might is the discipline we show to the world that war is not a benefit, but a destructive measure in the lives of any nation, and that a peaceful action is far better than a war with perpetual terror and loss of life.

鈥淚t is far better to lead a force into peace than into war.鈥

A National Armed Force is a necessity in the world we live in, but the foundation of decades of peace in our country and the vision of Canada of being a peacekeeper is an important element of who we are.

Billions are spent on military armaments every year in United States and other countries throughout the world. Our Canada, our country has a right to establish what those needs are.

Think of this if Russia, China and North Korea or any other country would stop threatening other nations, how much the world would be better off and the money that is spent on building up each countries' military might would be better spent on making a better world for the people in their country and throughout the world. They would become peacemakers.

Strengthen Canada鈥檚 military, but walk the bloodless miles in Canadian history of trying to stay out wars and out of wars that other nations have started.

Tread softly.

Does Canada need a military might to where they have to justify the size of its forces and the money that is needed to sustain its capability, and at sometime to have to begin justifying a potential of a war against another nation to use its military force to justify the reasoning for the expenditures and costs for its upkeep.

Canada does not have the population as United States to draw on to build up their military personnel nor do we have the annual income of United States. We can never match the military might of the United States unless this country wishes to go bankrupt, and I doubt that it would be the will of the Canadian people or government to go down that road.

Canada is an assembly of will and of history of being a country of people who muster the will to stay out of wars and choosing what the country needs to do to protect itself, and so it should be.

Protect the country, protect the people, but protect our free will to decide what is best for us.

Is military might the deciding factor in the safety of a country, yes to a point, but brains and a demonstration of intelligence to stay out of wars and conflicts should be considered in this context as an equally important part of who we are and our war machine when other countries want us to build a larger armed force then what we need and will probably request or demand are participation in their acts of conflict.

United States has a very large capacity in its military strength, but they have been defeated by less equipped troops in other countries. Warfare has changed, and we have seen this in the daily news where missiles and rockets can bring about an unimaginable amount of destruction to both military sites as well as civilian ones very quickly, and not just military personnel are the casualties of war but also the casualties and the deaths are of the civilian population. It is humanity at its worst. It truly is a crime against humanity.

There is no doubt war is hell, but it is not a fundamental principle for us to accept its path toward a solution to bring about peace.

The world at war is a warped world. It cannot escape from its ending but does exist with the ending of countless lives and the inevitable consequences and destruction of humanity with the first shot fired.

Canada is a country of great strength and of peaceful people who will take the path to peace as victory, and its people would rather extend a hand than cut off an extending hand that will bind us in a peaceful co-existence.

How large of an armed force we need in Canada? As I see it should only have the capability to protect our homeland, and the greatest part of that force is our identity that we have as a peacemaker not a warmonger. Our greatest achievement is to make peace. Our strength will be to protect ourselves in times of war and strife, but have the capacity and capability to understand not every weapon needs to be fired nor a trigger pulled.

The Canadian Armed Forces are the proud protectors of this nation. They need our support, they need our love, and they need to be peacemakers as well as warriors, and as for Canada there are these simple words said, 鈥淲e stand on guard.鈥
