LETTER: 91Ô´´ needs to do something about parking on busy roadway

Cyclists and motorists use the area around Allard Crescent, and a local resident is concerned there will be a serious incident

Dear Editor,

In the past, I have written to the 91Ô´´ Township bylaw office about the ongoing problem of cars and trucks parking in the cycling lanes on Allard Crescent, by the off-leash dog park, Derby Reach Park entrance, and the Fort-to-Fort trail parking lot.

The bylaw office response to me at the time, more than two years ago, was that they have limited resources to enforce the bylaw and ticket these infractions. They also told me engineering was looking at putting in signage at those locations to deter this illegal parking and possibly expand the side of the road so cars would not block the bike lanes. To date, nothing has been done, and the situation has gotten worse, not better.

It was recently reported in your paper that this corridor is one of the most heavily cycled areas in the Township. It’s only a matter of time before something tragic happens. If cyclists parked and blocked 200t Street in large numbers, I can just imagine the immediate response that would get from bylaw officers and the police. Why is the same consideration not afforded to heavily used cycling infrastructure?

I’m hoping that by writing this letter more cyclists will also submit their concerns about this issue until the Township actually takes some action. I am tired of the number of near misses I have personally experienced due to impatient drivers in this cycling corridor, so felt the need to go public with my concerns after no follow through from the Township.
