Sandy Hanawalt (left) and Lilianne Fuller are concerned about plans to remove trees near Brydon Lagoon.

Dear Editor,

[Re: Locals decry loss of Brydon trees, 91原创 Advance Times, June 11]

Thank you for your informative article about Brydon Lagoon. It is truly shocking that this area will be damaged by the planned clear cut by BC Hydro. You quoted Hydro as saying they are "maintaining vegetation," but they only mention one corner where they will keep trees.

Trees are essential for migrating birds, cooling of the lagoon, providing groundwater to the lagoon, and hiding the large substation infrastructure.

If people are interested in helping to get a compromise with BC Hydro they can write projects@bchydro.com and the MLA for this area of 91原创, Jody.Toor.MLA@leg.bc.ca.

Ask if BC Hydro could bury the overhead electric lines at the western edge of the lagoon so trees could be planted there. Or ask if BC Hydro would leave a three-metre tree perimeter along all of Brydon Lagoon so this unique ecosystem can continue to flourish.
