B.C. award for Surrey school coach who 'leads with quiet excellence'

BC School Sports has awarded Surrey school teacher Byron Green with a Citation of Excellence in Coaching.

Green, who has coached volleyball, basketball and track & field at four Catholic schools in B.C. including Holy Cross Regional High in Surrey, was among award-winners during a dinner event in Kelowna on Saturday, May 9.

Two other Excellence in Coaching winners were Del Komarniski (South Kamloops Secondary) and Jill Fougner (Brentwood College).

"Byron Green has been a pillar in the community, known for his humility, consistency and firm commitment to student-athletes," says a BC School Sports post on the X social media platform.

"Byron leads with quiet excellence. His coaching philosophy is simple: Meet athletes where they are, emphasize growth and ensure they enjoy the game."

BC School Sports, an organization of more than 450 public and independent schools in B.C., is the governing body for inter-school sport in the province, with more than 120,000 student-athlete registrations annually.

鈥淭he 2025 BCSS award winners are an exceptional group who have devoted decades to supporting youth through educational athletics. I offer my sincere congratulations on this well-earned recognition, and my deepest thanks for their outstanding leadership and service.鈥

Other 2025 award winners are Louise Holmes (Duchess Park Secondary, Honour Award), Nanaimo Christian School (Nanaimo, Most Inspirational School), Steve Ewen of The Province/Vancouver Sun and Vivian Chan of VCHAN Visuals (both for Media Person of the Year), Michelle Nederlof (Duncan Christian School, Women in Sport & Leadership), Angelo Pulice (soccer, for Officiating), Phil Ohl (Spectrum Community School, Administration), and Jennifer Maitland of  Windermere Community Secondary and David Prissinotti of York House School (Citation of Excellence as an Athletic Director).
