The Walnut Grove Gators are going to the provincial championships.

The senior girls rugby team — which captured the 91Ô´´ Shield with a 28-10 victory over the D.W. Poppy Redhawks on May 12 — will compete at the provincial championships May 22 to 24 in Port Alberni.

"I knew the girls had some talent and had a shot of getting to provincials, but their growth this year has been tremendous," said Walnut Grove coach Jon Fast.

Twenty-four teams — split into three tiers of eight each — will go for provincial gold.

"I would say the goal at the beginning of the year was to get to provincials (but) now the goal is to win the provincial tier 2 championship," Fast said.

The Gators went 3-3 during the regular season and 2-1 at the Fraser Valley championships to finish fifth.

They had also done a tour of Ireland where they won three of four games.

"The team's strength this year is that we play as a team," Fast said.

"This is not the most talent we have had in our girls program, but they are really coming together and understanding the game a lot better."
