Facing a must-win game with just seven players, the 91原创 Fundamental Titans came through with a massive victory.
The win allowed the Titans senior girls volleyball team to place fifth at last week鈥檚 Fraser Valley AA championships, and gave them one more opportunity to qualify for next week鈥檚 provincial championships through a wild-card game.
And while the team ultimately came up short in that quest, losing the game, it was quite the season for the Titans.
鈥淲e came up short in that goal but playing in the very competitive Lower Mainland, that is a tough goal to achieve,鈥 said coach Dwight Unrau.
Despite having just nine players, the Titans came in top spot in their division during the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record. They also had strong showings at a pair of tournaments, placing third at the Bear Paw Classic and finishing in the top eight of the prestigious 25-team Trinity Western University tournament.
鈥淭he biggest surprise for me was how they never gave up on the court. We would go on to win multiple times when down in games,鈥 Unrau said. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 achieve that without resolve and courage and they stepped up over and over.鈥
鈥淚n the provincial playoffs, we faced many challenging games and no matter how the score sheet was in the other team鈥檚 favour, they never gave up.鈥
At the Fraser Valleys, the Titans lost the opener to Pacific Academy 鈥 the eventual Valley champs 鈥 but stayed alive in the double knockout format with a big win over Abbotsford Christian.
They then defeated Southridge in the fifth/sixth-place game to earn a shot at the wild-card.
