Trinity Western Spartans basketball teams close first half of season on winning note

The Trinity Western Spartans basketball teams both ended the first semester of league play on a high note with victories over the host Brandon Bobcats.

The Spartans men鈥檚 team could only watch as a Bobcats three-pointer at the buzzer missed to give the road team a 75-73 win.

The women鈥檚 game was much more one-sided as the Spartans delivered a decisive 74-23 victory.

鈥淭onight鈥檚 game was a great indication of how hard we鈥檝e been working this team and is a great way to end the first half of the season,鈥 said coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.

The offence was led by the trio of Emily Knauff (14 points), Chelsey Olsen (12 points) and Stephanie Carkner (10 points).

鈥淭he second half of the game, we really stepped up our game and got a good flow going,鈥 said coach Scott Allen.

鈥淚t was a good way to end the semester and we will look to build on it in the second half of the season.鈥

With less than four minutes remaining, Trinity Western trailed by six points, but thanks to some stellar foul shooting 鈥 eight of 10 鈥 the team made up the deficit and won by a basket.

Justin Bakuteka led all scorers with 25 while Mark Perrin had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Another key for the visitors was their bench, which outscored the Bobcats bench 37-14.

Perrin led the team with 21 points.

The women鈥檚 team also lost to Regina, 72-63.
