In Trinity Western鈥檚 first outdoor meet of the season, Spartans high jumper Emma Nuttall broke the Achilles Cup meet record and earned first place overall at the SFU/UBC Dual Meet on April 7 at Simon Fraser鈥檚 Fox Field.
Despite blustery conditions, Nuttall cleared 1.74m, breaking the previous meet record of 1.70m, which was set by SFU鈥檚 Ruky Abdulai in 2006.
Nuttall鈥檚 performance had her well ahead of her university counterparts as she finished nearly 20 centimetres clear of second place Manisha Kandola, who jumped 1.55m.
鈥淚n cold, rainy, Scotland-like weather Emma had an excellent competition using a very short approach,鈥 said Spartans coach Laurier Primeau.
鈥淲e were able to use it as a training session, and she came out with a meet record, which was previously held by the Canadian long jump record holder. To jump 1.74m in Baltic conditions after waiting an hour to enter the competition was very impressive.鈥
Also of note for the Spartans was the performance of James Linde in the long jump pit. Linde finished in top spot after a jump of 6.67m, which was not far off the meet record of 6.79m, which was set by UBC鈥檚 Reid Gustavson in 2009.
