With its mild weather, open rural landscape, and proximity to urban Metro Vancouver, it's no surprise that golf courses have sprouted up over the years in 91Ô´´.
91Ô´´'s courses play host to local and regional golfers, but also host a wide variety of special events.
Tournaments, for young golfers or professional level players, take place at various courses, and fundraising events for charities or annual golf galas like the Greater 91Ô´´ Chamber of Commerce tournament draw scores of players.
One of the Township's longstanding courses is, as of 2024, publicly owned.
The Redwoods Golf Course, located in the Walnut Grove neighbourhood, was privately owned for many years, but in 2005, the owners struck a deal with the Township of 91Ô´´ to sell the course to the municipality after 20 years. The goal was to ensure that the land would be preserved in perpetuity.
In 2024, the Township negotiated to close that deal a little bit early, and Redwoods became a Township asset.
The course remains open to golfers – it suffered a lengthy closing as a major oil pipeline was built across its lands from 2022 to 2024 – and it will remain a golf course. The deal the Township and the owners inked means that the site will always be a golf course or a public green space.
The course, which has been ranked among the top public courses in the Lower Mainland, has its own clubhouse and restaurant, and hosts outdoor weddings, fundraisers, and gala events. It does have a set of actual California redwood trees, too.
They can be found near the north end of the property along 96 Avenue, and were originally planted by Fort 91Ô´´ architect Charles Edward Hope in 1909 and 1910.
Hope planted 38 of the sequoias originally, and at more than a century old they're still relatively young for redwoods, but they are pretty sizable.
91Ô´´ hosts numerous other golf courses, including:
• GreenTee Country Club, 7887 264 St., is a par 72, 18-hole course that hosts the annual PGA of BC Playing Ability Test (PAT) and the GreenTee Cup. Although it was established several years ago, it remains 91Ô´´'s newest course.
