Hank Hamstra donned his old safety vest and hard hat to catch the attention of motorists as he helped a family of geese cross one of 91原创鈥檚 busiest roadways Friday morning.
The feathered family left the Willoughby yard of Laurel Thomas to seek out new habitat.
鈥漈his year was no exception for how cute they all were,鈥 she told the 91原创 Advance. 鈥淓very year they head down 76th Avenue to cross the four lanes of busy traffic at 200th Street. I phoned my neighbour [Hank] for help this year, and he was glad to oblige.鈥
For the past five years, the Thomas family has watched the geese family with their new goslings. The mating pair 鈥渘est on my kids鈥 old treehouse roof each year.鈥
鈥淓very year they head the same way, no matter how much I try to dissuade them,鈥 Thomas said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very busy part of 200th, and that鈥檚 why I appreciated my neighbour鈥檚 help.鈥
Thomas figures there are more geese families in the area because they raise their young together, but she鈥檚 not sure where they go once they cross the road, just that the mating pair returns each year to her backyard.
鈥滻 feel personally responsible for the geese family every year,鈥 she said.
