High school graduate Nicholas Arvanetes used his love of working on cars and building things to spread gratitude and positivity in his community, which has earned him a scholarship for his kindness.
Nicholas, along with 25 other Grade 12 students across 91ԭ, submitted essays highlighting their kindness for the 4th annual ‘Nana Johansson’ Kindness Scholarship, created by Aldergrove realtor Jodi Steeves of Re/Max Aldercenter.
“This yearly scholarship is to promote my Nana’s values. Simple acts of kindness at home, at school and in our community,” Steeves told the Aldergrove Star.
“Nicholas Arvanetes is so deserving of this scholarship, he deserves more than $1,000.”
Arvanetes has on many occasions used his own passions to show appreciation to those around him, according to his essay. There was a time after school when he noticed his teacher having trouble putting together a desk. Arvanetes stepped in and offered to help complete it for her.
“Another teacher admired a pen I was using in class, and I explained to him that I had made it myself in woodwork [class]. The next day, I brought him one to keep,” Arvanetes said in his essay.
During the pandemic, Arvanetes helped his dad restore a Land Rover that was sitting unusable in their Walnut Grove garage due to his dad not having enough time to fix it. The pair spent time getting the car to run again, which his dad was grateful for, the Grade 12 wrote.
Arvanetes has gone out of his way to help out the community and family – including rearranging his schedule so that he could drive one of his friends to and from school, which would otherwise be a hour-and-a-half commute on public transit.

After high school, Arvanetes plans to start working and get hours on the job, then he wants to work towards getting his Red Seal as an automotive service technician.
“Kindness has been proven to decrease stress and give people more energy. It is also good for the heart and is naturally contagious. Most importantly it shows others that you care, especially when it is unexpected,” Arvanetes concluded.
