91原创's CARES has added capacity, Clive Ellis said.

91原创's Canadian Animal Rescue and Extended Shelter (CARES) has added some much-needed capacity to house rescued cats and kittens.

Clive Ellis, CARES Public Relations Director, said the non-profit has been renovating an older house next to the shelter, which was overflowing.

"It's the house right in front of our shelter, and it's a very old building," Ellis told the 91原创 Advance Times.

"We are now in the process of renovating it, and we have finished part of it, which enables us to give more sort of shelter space, if that's the right word, for the kitties when they come in," Ellis said.

"We've painted half of the downstairs, and we've attended to the plumbing, and the gas and electricity, so it's sort of up and running, but internal painting hasn't yet finished, but we do have kitties in there now, and it's a godsend because we were getting cramped."

"We were using the trailer behind the shelter, and in some respects that wasn't an ideal location, but this is excellent," Ellis commented.

As of Tuesday, June 30, following an weekend adoptathon at the 91原创 Bypass PetSmart that found homes for 14 cats and kittens, there were still close to 187 in care at CARES, Ellis estimated.

The shelter and PetSmart have 98, plus those in foster care.

"We have adult fosters, 18, and mums and kittens in fosters, 48, and 23 mums and kittens in the new house."

"We've had a couple of births with five or six kitties."

CARES was formed in 1993 by a group of animal lovers who wanted a safe place for homeless cats.

There is a no-kill policy. In 1998, CARES began an alliance with the PetSmart store in 91原创 where cats and kittens can be viewed seven days a week at the store adoption centre, with volunteers on hand there each day.
