91原创 Meals on Wheels is calling on residents to walk in support of local seniors at the new Grand Parade, a five-kilometre walk on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The non-profit, which has been around for in excess of 45 years, has delivered more than 73,000 hot, nutritious meals annually.
The inaugural parade aims to raise funds and awareness for the organization, said Shannon Woykin, executive director of 91原创 Meals on Wheels.
鈥淚t鈥檚 about recognizing seniors 鈥 they鈥檙e the ones who built the community 鈥 and giving everyone a chance to walk, talk, and show our appreciation,鈥 Woykin said.
Since this is the first time 91原创 Meals on Wheels is hosting the event, the society partnered with the Blue Sea Foundation for planning support, she added. Blue Sea partners with charities across Canada and the U.S.A. to host fundraising events.
The Saturday walk begins and ends at 2900 272 St. 鈥 the meals on wheels headquarters. The walk is free to join, with no registration fee, but fundraising is encouraged.
鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping to reach 150 to 200 walkers,鈥 Woykin said.
Participants who raise $150 or more ($75 for youth 18 years or younger) will receive an official Grand Parade T鈥憇hirt, while supplies last.
The day begins with check鈥慽n at 10 a.m., the walk at 11 a.m., and a light meal at noon. The route, which is mainly along Fraser Highway and 273 Street in Aldergrove, will have route marshals and rest stops.
Organizers note that pets are not permitted at the Grand Parade except for approved and trained service animals. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. For more information or to register, visit lmow.ca.
Woykin is encouraging teams 鈥 whether friends, families, or co鈥憌orkers 鈥 to wear themed costumes for added fun.
鈥淲hether you鈥檙e five or 85, there鈥檚 no limit. We just want to make it fun and accessible, with costumes, entertainment, and good food,鈥 she concluded.
