The four 91原创 Rotary clubs are launching a $200,000 50/50 lottery on Sept. 8th, with the grand prize winner receiving up to $100,000.
Rotary Club of 91原创, Central, Sunrise, and Aldergrove 鈥 plus the Rotaract Club 鈥 will split the other half to be used to continue supporting community needs and projects.
91原创 Rotary chair Pauline Buck said they鈥檙e hoping regular supporters 鈥 and some new ones 鈥 will help them help others by buying tickets.
鈥淣o surprise, COVID-19 has prevented our regular fundraising gatherings but we don鈥檛 want to stop providing support to the local community,鈥 Buck said. 鈥淓specially now when there鈥檚 so much more need than even before, so we鈥檙e trying this way.鈥
Longstanding and sizable charity events such as Aldergrove Rotary Club鈥檚 annual Lobsterfest, which had been slated for late-April, the third annul RibFest, which ahd been set for mid-August, and the Fraser Valley Wine Festival, which has resulted in more than $1 million for local charitable causes since its inception in 1989.
RibFest drew 35,000 people to McLeaod Park last summer and raised $150,000 鈥 which was divided among the clubs to support projects including Starfish Backpack, which sent home groceries to dozens of elementary students on Fridays.
No physical rotary events have occurred during the past six month with meetings being held online on Zoom.
鈥淭he lottery is new to us,鈥 Buck explained, noting that it was a way to raise funds without holding a gathering or physical event. 鈥淪o many charities are doing a lottery because it鈥檚 the only fundraiser you can do.鈥
Tickets go on sale Sept. 8th until Nov. 30, with the final draw taking place on Dec. 3.
Tickets cost one for $20, three for $50, or eight for $100.
Buck said if the proceeds from the lottery can help cover some of the Rotary initiatives and is popular with residents, it may be a permanent fixture beyond 2020 and COVID-19.
鈥淚f we do well, I can鈥檛 see why we wouldn鈥檛 continue,鈥 she said.
