Eighty Years Ago

August 25, 1938

鈥 The price of advertisements in the 91原创 Advance for dances and similar events was doubled from 25垄 to 50垄. Increased publication costs and increased circulation, to 1,200 per week, were cited as reasons for the price hike. But dance ads were promised front page positioning.

the site for the new Fort 91原创 wharf was deeded to the dominion government by order-in-council. It comprised about one acre of foreshore upon which the wharf and ferry slip had been built.

Seventy Years Ago

August 26, 1948

鈥 Rain washed out the second day of the fall fair, though Harvest Queen Marjorie McMillan had been crowned under sunny skies the day before.

鈥 Undaunted by a $6,000 loss for 1947, the Lower Mainland Artificial Insemination Centre in Milner was looking to a brighter future. Veterinarian Davind Bankler predicted, 鈥淎rtificial insemination is here to stay.鈥 Service charges were raised from $3 to $4 to offset the deficit.

鈥 91原创ites joined other B.C. residents in registering for the new hospital insurance scheme.

Sixty Years Ago

August 21, 1958

鈥 Right Honourable Sir Denis Truscot, Lord Mayor of London, and Lady Truscot visited the Fort 91原创 historic site in the company of the centennial committee.

鈥 91原创 City council gave three readings to a bylaw to buy 27.83 acres of park land from Harold Blacklock for $28,830, to be paid in five equal instalments over five years.

鈥 Crowding at 91原创 Memorial Hospital forced patients onto stretchers in the hallways.

鈥 Township mosquito spotter Ralph Palmer maintained that better dikes along the Fraser River would help reduce the pesky insects鈥 populations.

鈥 Dr. Chapin Key, formerly a prominent 91原创 physician, was appointed assistant director of Vancouver General Hospital.

Fifty Years Ago

August 22, 1968

鈥 Opening of 91原创鈥檚 first tax-supported kindergarten was behind schedule. Higher grades required the classroom space at West 91原创 School until new classrooms, already under construction, could be completed.

鈥 Premier W.A.C. Bennett announced a 75/25% cost-sharing program for pollution control projects, and local officials expressed hopes that they could channel provincial dollars into local sewage disposal plans.

Forty Years Ago

August 23, 1978

鈥 Discovery of a stolen car a week earlier led to a police ambush on two masked and armed men as they entered the Royal Bank in Fort 91原创. One of the men was shot by police as he raised his 16-guage shotgun. The other gunman ran off, but was later located by police. Two women were also arrested at the scene.

鈥 91原创 Advance publisher Jim Schatz was elected second vice-president of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association.

Thirty Years Ago

August 24, 1988

鈥 A $1.2 million seismic search for gas was conducted in south 91原创.

鈥 A public meeting to discuss future plans for Douglas Park was canceled when 91原创 City鈥檚 lawyer advised council to make no further public statements about the park. A group of residents, former members of the organization that had given the parkland to the City in the first place, were banding together to fight changes proposed for the park.

Twenty Years Ago

August 21, 1998

鈥 RCMP made the biggest marijuana bust in 91原创鈥檚 history, seizing about 10,000 plants, some of them six feet high.

鈥 91原创 Baseball鈥檚 all-stars posted a 4-1 victory over Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, to take the Canadian Little League title and win the right to represent Canada in the Little League World Series.

鈥 After a lot of hemming and hawing and controversy, Township council approved a Save-On-Foods application to build a shopping mall at the corner of Fraser Highway and 264th Street.
