• Two masked badits made off with $3,500 in an armed robbery of the 91Ô­´´ branch of the Royal Bank. The branch manager managed to nip out the back door.

January 29, 1948

• The 91Ô­´´ Ratepayers’ Association celebrated its first anniversary in a carnival atmosphere. The fledgling organization had made a clean sweep of council seats in the December elections.

• Reeve Tom Reid announced that council would lift the licence of any real estate agent who sold property on a promise that the municipality would build a road to it.

• A petition was started to request improved postal service.

Sixty Years Ago

January 30, 1958

• A campaign started to raise $10,000 locally towards a 40-bed old folks home. Total cost of the project was estimated at $100,000. The provincial government offered a third of the cost, and the rest could be financed at a low interest rate by the federal Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

• Three inches of rainfall closed Berry Road (208th Street) south of Fraser Highway.

February 1, 1968

• The school board produced a provisional budget of $3,201, 813. Salary hikes for teachers and janitors accounted for $246,716 of the $262,783 increase over the previous year’s budget.

• 91Ô­´´ Agricultural Association directors chose Alex MacFarlane as their president for 1968. Joe Young and Bruce Rutherford were first and second vice-presidents, and Sarah E. Norman was secretary.

• The school board demanded that the 91Ô­´´ Teachers’ Association replace its representatives to the joint planning committee, but the teachers refused, instead holding a special confidence vote to support its reps.

• The 91Ô­´´ Social Credit constituency association called for a rollback of the seven per cent provincial sales tax to five per cent.
