February 3, 1938

• While 91Ô­´´ Teachers’ Association rep Roy Mountain was asking the school board for a private meeting to discuss salary increases, the provincial government was telling the board that salaries were to be cut by $4 per month.

• J.H. Frisby was elected president of the 91Ô­´´ Agricultural Association, which was to hold the 1939 fall fair in 91Ô­´´ Prairie.

February 5, 1948

• B.E. Buzza and L.K. Sully were elected president and vice-president of the 91Ô­´´ Co-op Society.

• Glen Valley farmer John McMillan ws elected to head the Fort 91Ô­´´ and District Board of Trade.

• Fire on a Jericho Road (72nd Avenue) farm killed 12 hogs.

Sixty Years Ago

February 6, 1958

• Skyway Air Services, based at 91Ô­´´ Airport, bought 10 crop-spraying aircraft.

• A boulder from the Otter Road (248th Street) gravel pit was selected to mark the starting point of the 1824 McMillan portage from the Nicomekl River to the Salmon River. The marker was put on Mill Lott’s farm.

Fifty Years Ago

February 8, 1968

• City Council voiced suspicions that Township assessments were too low. The doubts surfaced when the City portion of the school budget rose from 20.26 per cent in 1967 to 23.06 per cent in 1968.

• While 91Ô­´´â€™s student population had grown by a third over the previous eight years, the cost of education rose 120 per cent.

• Cedar Hill Centre extended care unit was officially opened – weeks before any patients were slated to enter the place.

Forty Years Ago

February 8, 1978

• Unless the provincial government stepped in, the school board announced, there would be a 10-mill hike in school taxes.

• At $1,048,811, Township building permits issued in January were about a third less in value than those given out in January 1977.

• City council planned to approach the highways ministry in regards to extending 91Ô­´´ Bypass from Glover Road to Fraser Highway.

Thirty Years Ago

February 3, 1988

• An Aldergrove resident convicted of drunk driving causing death was sentenced to 3½ years in jail, and had his licence suspended for 15 years.

• 91Ô­´´ Township’s dog control bylaw was amended to identify pit bull terriers, pit bulls, Staffordshire terriers, and other mixed breeds of dogs as vicious animals unless controlled or muzzled.

Twenty Years Ago

February 6, 1998

• Compassion apparently outweighed thievery. An urn containing an elderly man’s late wife, burgled from the man’s home a few days earlier, was returned entirely intact.

• Township staff was working on a $1.3-million development plan for 91Ô­´´ Municipal Airport.

C • ouncil voted 6-1 to raise the budget for Aldergrove’s downtown revitalization to $4.56 million.

• Local artist Brandon Gabriel received national attention. The Grade 12 student’s work was published in an Ottawa-based national newspaper, Aboriginal Youth Today, and in a nationally distributed book.

• A woman who had $20,000 worth of jewelery stolen from her car said she wanted the goods back, for sentimental reasons.
