Eighty Years Ago

April 28, 1938

鈥 The local Canadian Legion requested police protection for road signs, claiming that at least 15 were in disrepair as a result of wilful damage by news boys throwing around papers and not cleaning up their mess.

鈥 The 鈥1938 Drink More Milk Week鈥 started. L.K. Elmhurst said that, if people put their problems into one basket and tried to find a cure for all of them, in 50 cases out of 100, the advice would be to drink more milk.

Seventy Years Ago

April 29, 1948

鈥 Council prepared to expropriate property at the rear of 91原创 Prairie business on the south side of Fraser Highway to build a 20-foot-wide lane.

鈥 Walter R. Major, councillor for Ward Two, was taken to hospital in critical condition after suffering a heart attack.

Sixty Years Ago

May 1, 1958

鈥 Council called for tenders to build sidewalks on both sides of the Trans-Canada Highway (Fraser Highway) east from Telephone Road (206th Street).

鈥 91原创鈥檚 best cribbage players were honoured at Murraville Hall at the 34th annual crib banquet. The Otter team won the league title by defeating Fort 91原创 in play-off action.

Fifty Years Ago

May 2, 1968

鈥 A Municipal Act amendment added tenants to the municipal and school board voters lists. Previously, only taxpayers (primarily landowners) were allowed to vote and run for civic office.

鈥 City alderman Len Nicholas was re-elected for a second term as president of the 91原创 Memorial Hospital Society.

May 3, 1978

鈥 With an indoor swimming pool design chosen a November referendum, council hadn鈥檛 yet decided on cost limits and the pool鈥檚 size.

鈥 A jury trial in New Westminster, into the knifing death of a 23-year-old man outside 91原创 Hotel, got underway.

Thirty Years Ago

April 27, 1988

鈥 An attempt by Township Alderman John Scholtens to have 91原创 withdraw from the B.C. Transit system was narrowly defeated.

鈥 A 7.2 per cent increase in school taxes added $36 to 91原创 residents鈥 tax bills, as school trustees unanimously supported a $67.2 million budget.

Twenty Years Ago

May 1, 1998

鈥 Sylvia Anderson鈥檚 humanitarian service was recognized when she was installed into the Order of the Red Cross.

鈥 Fort 91原创 was transformed into a Christmas wonderland with dozens of Santas, for filming of the Walt Disney movie, 鈥淚鈥檒l Be Home for Christmas.鈥

鈥 Rick Hansen was in town, inspiring school kids with stories about his Man in Motion World Tour which raised $24 million for spinal injury research.

鈥 Township councillor Mel Kostisky called for a referendum to let the public decide whether or not to build the 208th Street freeway overpass.

鈥 Hal Laycoe, first coach of the Vancouver Canucks NHL squad, died in 91原创 Memorial Hospital.
