VIDEO: Aldergrove celebrates Canada Day with food and dance

Dance, music, food, and games were enjoyed in celebration at Aldergrove Athletic Park

A sunny day with a cool breeze was the perfect weather for Aldergrove residents and visitors to celebrate Canada鈥檚 156th birthday.

Games, music, and vendors gathered together to celebrate Canada Day on Saturday, July 1 at the Aldergrove Athletic Park.

Lawn checkers and Connect 4, disc golf, bouncy castles, exhibitor booths, and food trucks were at the park.

Live entertainment was held on stage throughout the day with performance like Karima Essa鈥檚 Bollywood dance, Norden the Magician鈥檚 magic show, and the Wild Moccasin Dancers鈥 intertribal dance.

Kevin Muirhead, acting corporate events manager at the 91原创 Township, had the idea for a Canada Day celebration in Aldergrove last year and said he was glad to see it again this year.

鈥淚t鈥檚 super important to bring people and communities together, especially after COVID,鈥 he said.

鈥淚 really like Aldergrove 鈥 everyone comes out, they all have a good time.鈥

Jim McGregor, master of ceremonies at the celebration, said there was a great lineup of entertainment for the event.

鈥淲e had a karate demonstration, a Bollywood dance by Karima, and a magic performance. The day finished with the Kundra African Culture Music and Dance group,鈥 he said.

Muirhead said the live entertainment was chosen to celebrate the diversity that is in Canada 鈥 and in 91原创.

91原创 MLA Megan Dykeman and Township mayor Eric Woodward gave speeches as part of the official Canada Day ceremony on stage.

The Township had water stations throughout the park and a mist station so visitors stay refreshed as they explored the activities.

Nichole Marples, executive director of 91原创 Environmental Protection Society (LEPS), was manning a booth with an interactive game teaching kids how sewers affect the local salmon habitats and creeks.

Jenn Shroeder, director of philanthropy and communications at 91原创 Animal Protection Society, had a booth with volunteers and two German shepard puppies that were up for adoption.

RCMP officers, 91原创 City firefighters, and some Canadian Armed Forces members had some of their vehicles on display as well.

Dirt bike riders were encouraged to try the track at the park and could get information from a BMX booth beside it.

Aldergrove Elks was also at the park with a free selfie-booth. Visitors could dress up in dresses or traditional uniforms to get their picture taken.

The Royal Canadian Legion鈥檚 Aldergrove branch had celebrations inside and outside including live music and games, with food and two large Canada Day birthday cakes.

This year marked Canada鈥檚 156th birthday.
