VIDEO: 91原创 repair cafe 'community building'

Next one scheduled for October at Aldergrove library

91原创 City resident Sally Mills and her sewing machine were working on clothes and textiles at the 91原创 Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) repair cafe.

"I've been doing this for about two and a half years now," Mills told the 91原创 Advance Times.

"It's nice to see that things are being repaired and reused," Mills responded when asked about the appeal of volunteering to fix things for free.

"I can use my skills, but [it's] also giving a little bit back to the community in general, helping people to have things repaired, especially when it's just a small thing that's wrong with them."

It was the fourth LEPS repair cafe of the year, held July 26 at the society offices in Murrayville. The next Repair Cafe is scheduled for the Aldergrove Regional Library on October 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p,m.

LEPS Environmental Educator Garima Wilson described it as a "community building" event.

"We really like this event because it brings our community together," Wilson explained.

Wilson was also a client, having brought, a pair of paints and a soap dispenser to get fixed.

Volunteers will be on hand to work on household and mechanical devices, computers, jewellery, sharpening tools, bicycles or clothing, either fixing them or teaching people how to do it themselves.

Repair Cafes got their start in the Netherlands in 2009, as part of a grassroots movement that aims to reduce waste, overconsumption, and planned obsolescence.

It has since grown into a global movement with over 2,500 cafes worldwide.

91原创 Environmental Partners Society is a non-profit, charitable organization that partners with local environmental stewardship groups with a goal of  鈥減rotecting and restoring the environment through education, cooperation and action鈥 and fostering a balanced approach to sustainable living.
