Major crash closes Highway 17 near Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal

Police have closed Highway 17 between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive

A multi-vehicle crash in Tsawwassen that left one person with serious injuries and closed Highway 17 in both directions near the BC Ferries Terminal Saturday continues to affect traffic, but one lane has now reopened for eastbound travel.

The collision between a motorcycle and an SUV happened around 11:13 a.m. on July 12.

"The motorcycle rider was taken to hospital with what are believed to be serious, life-altering injuries. The driver of the SUV remained on scene and was not injured in the collision," RCMP stated in a press release.

Other lanes remain closed between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive. Delta Police have rerouted traffic onto Tsawwassen Drive and have asked motorists to avoid the area.

There is a detour in place for those travelling needing to access the ferry terminal but DriveBC warns to expect heavy delays.

The forensic collision reconstructionist with the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (LMD-ICARS) is investigating the crash.

"Factors that may have contributed to the collision are under investigation," police stated.

Cpl. Dave Noon with the LMD-ICARS that, "diversions are in place" and to "expect significant traffic delays" while police investigate. As of 1:20 p.m. Saturday, Noon said there was no anticipated time for reopening.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. Noon tweeted that one eastbound had reopened on Highway 17.

"Please drive with care and consideration," Noon noted.
