A fire broke out at an apartment at Mary Street and Patten Avenue in Chilliwack Tuesday night (May 6).
Fire crews used ladders to access the fire in the sixth floor of the 11-storey building. Dozens of residents were receiving emergency service support on the sidewalks in the area, and there were residents who had suffered smoke inhalation.
Residents throughout the building stood on their balconies, calling out information to first responders below. There were witness reports that some people had been trapped in their units.
The fire began around 7 p.m., and this is the second fire in recent days at the seniors' apartment building. . RCMP were on scene conducting interviews with residents and neighbours.
Several people were transported two blocks down to Chilliwack General Hospital, where staff were preparing to treat multiple victims. At least one woman was given oxygen on scene. First responders worked on her, while she rested on the fire truck's bumper. Paramedics on scene took over her care, putting her on a stretcher.
