Surrey man identified as homicide victim found in burnt vehicle in Popkum

Homicide team release name of 22-year-old Hamza Fazil in effort to advance investigation

Homicide officers have identified the man whose body was found in a in July.

The remains of 22-year-old Hamza Fazil of Surrey were found by Agassiz RCMP inside the vehicle that went up in flames on July 27 in the 52100 block of Cheam Road near Chilliwack, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in a press release on Aug. 16.

They released his name in an effort to advance their investigation.

"Mr. Fazil had previous interactions with the police. Investigators believe this was a targeted incident with links to the B.C. gang conflict," Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi of IHIT stated in the release.

He was reported missing by family members and was last seen on the same day his body was found (July 27) in Surrey around 9 p.m. in the 13300 block of Old Yale Road.

When Agassiz RCMP and firefighters found Fazil in the burnt vehicle, criminality was suspected.

鈥淭his investigation is still in the early stages,鈥 Dhesi said. 鈥淚nvestigators are looking to build a timeline of Mr. Fazil鈥檚 activities prior to the homicide. We would urge anyone with information about him or his activities in the days leading up to his death to contact investigators.鈥

Investigators continue to ask anyone who may have dash camera footage from the areas of Cheam Road and Bridal Falls Road between 10 p.m. on July 27 and 1 a.m. on July 28, to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
