Aldergrove lap pool closing for extensive work

The seven-year-old pool in Aldergrove will need an extended shutdown for resurfacing.

The lap pool is being resurfaced which will require it to close from March 31 to August 2025.

The seven-year-old pools in Aldergrove will need an extended shutdown for lap-pool resurfacing.

Typically the Township closes the lap pool, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room at the Aldergrove Community Centre (ACC) for approximately three weeks for annual maintenance at the end of spring break, but the lap pool will require extra work and it will impact the other amenities.

The resurfacing will require the lap pool鈥檚 annual three-week maintenance closure, beginning March 31, to be extended for three additional weeks during demolition (for user safety reasons due to proximity to the lap pool, this extension includes the lap pool, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room). The lap pool will be closed for a longer period during resurfacing, due to the complex nature of that process, according to a Township announcement.

After the initial demolition, the small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room are planned to re-open around May 12.

The resurfacing is anticipated to take up to four more months, re-opening by late August. Due to weather/temperature constraints, seasonal water tables and hydrostatic pressure, the work needs to be completed during the spring/summer months.

But the approved longer-term solution of installing tiles for the pool surface will give it a life expectancy of 15 years. The recreation centre opened in 2018.

All other ACC amenities are planned to be open during all or much of this project, subject to which amenity and based on its regular annual operating schedule, including the arena, fitness centre, small leisure pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, waterpark, and wave pool.

But some people's swimming lessons, public swim sessions, and user group events will be impacted. The Township is contacting people impacted and working to make arrangements so those activities can be done at other Township sites. If the Township does not reach out, there is no impact to scheduled activities.

The work was considered for scheduling in 2026 however, deferring it creates much higher risk for further deterioration of the surface and potentially the underlying structure, and would create safety concerns for users, require a much longer closure period, and lead to higher resurfacing costs, according to the Township announcement.
