A bridge that connects a major north-south route in rural 91Ô´´ will be repaired and re-open temporarily by August or September, at a cost of $575,000.
The Coghlan Creek bridge, in the 6700 block of 248 Street, has been closed since late April, after Township staff did a visual inspection and found serious undermining on its north end.
Most of the funding, $440,000 of the total cost for the immediate repair, will come from a surplus that was budgeted for another overpass upgrade project, but didn't have to be used.
After the temporary repairs, which will allow the span to re-open later this year, the Township will have to replace the entire bridge in the future, the staff report said.
The report also offered up an optional fix – the Township could have paid $382,000 for a temporary bailey bridge to re-open the span within a week, allowing traffic to pass by until the repairs at the end of summer. Councillors did not discuss the optional temporary fix.
The Township is advising drivers to either head west to 232 Street or east to 264 Street, although it is also possible to bypass the bridge by using 256 Street and 64 Avenue.
