91Ô´´ animal shelter offers private, off-leash space for rent

Funds from new initiative will go towards LAPS programs

91Ô´´ Animal Protections Society (LAPS) is now offering up an area of its property for dog owners to rent so their furry friends can enjoy the outdoors in a private, secure off-leash space.

Using , LAPS will list the front playground -- which has a digging box and agility equipment -- for a rental price of $10.50 per hour.

Sarah Jones, executive director of LAPS, said that some dogs find traditional dog parks overwhelming.

"So, pet owners seek safe alternatives for off-leash play and bonding time. The LAPS SniffSpot offers a fun, enclosed environment where dogs can run freely, explore, and burn off energy," she said.

SniffSpot is a free-to-use website that logs various off-leash friendly areas around the world that was founded in 2016.

Jones says the rental fee will directly support LAPS' donor-funded programs, such as Major's Legacy Fund, the Pet Food Bank, spay and neuter vouchers, and emergency boarding.

"SniffSpot booking helps us continue providing essential services like medical care, food assistance, and re-homing support for animals in need," she said.

She noted that in 2024, LAPS provided care to more than 800 animals and assisted about 67 families with urgent care payments, as well as food for 1,500 animals through the food bank.

"LAPS' participation in SniffSpot aligns with its commitment to animal welfare and supporting pet owners facing challenges," Jones said.

"This initiative not only enriches the lives of local dogs but also creates a much need funding stream for LAPS’ to continue these important community programs."
