VIDEO: 91原创 celebrates 50 years of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Annual flag raising took place at 91原创 City Hall on Thursday

Being a Big Sister in 91原创 was 鈥渧ery fulfilling鈥 for South Otter resident Jacqueline Cox.

Seven years ago, she had taken time off school and worked different administrative jobs before applying to volunteer at Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of 91原创 to find more fulfillment in her life.

Cox was matched with her Little Sister, Bethany, for five years until the program ended, but they have kept in touch since.

鈥淏ethany is in her third year of university and thriving鈥 [pursuing] graphic design,鈥 Cox fondly shared.

She recalled Bethany鈥檚 knack for seeing colours and patterns in a unique, artistic way ever since they had met.

鈥淪he鈥檚 not the only one that鈥檚 grown, I鈥檝e become a better person because of her. It鈥檚 not a program that鈥檚 just for a Little, there鈥檚 so many people that benefit from it like the families or guardian that they鈥檙e under,鈥 Cox said.

To those considering volunteering to be a Big Brother or Big Sister, Cox said to 鈥渏ust do it.鈥

鈥淚t seems like a daunting process鈥 but once you get the ball rolling, the agency is fantastic in supporting you and making sure you鈥檙e cared for. Once you get into it you鈥檒l never regret it,鈥 she said.

Cox is now the marketing coordinator for BBBS of 91原创.

She was one of many Big Brothers and Big Sisters at the 91原创 City Hall on Thursday, Sept. 7, for the annual flag raising to acknowledge Big Brother Big Sister Month (September).

Roslyn Henderson, executive director of BBBS of 91原创, the month of September is an opportunity to celebrate the impact it has on the community.

鈥淚t celebrates what mentoring is and what it means to the communities that Big Brothers Big Sisters are serving,鈥 she said.

City Mayor Nathan Pachal and MP Andrew Mercier also attended, along with city staff and members of the public.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of 91原创 is going into its 50th year, and will be celebrating at the George Preston Recreation Centre tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m.
