91原创鈥檚 political leaders react with shock, sorrow to mass shooting

Township and City mayors both thanked police, offered condolences to victims鈥 families

91原创鈥檚 elected leaders reacted with sorrow to the shootings that killed two victims and left two injured on Monday, July 25.

鈥淲e had a tragedy this morning in our neighbourhoods, in the City of 91原创,鈥 said Mayor Val van den Broek.

Speaking at a press conference alongside local and regional RCMP officers, van den Broek was visibly emotional about the attacks, which struck at three locations within 91原创 City and one in 91原创 Township.

鈥淲e鈥檙e strong, we鈥檒l get through this,鈥 van den Broek said.

She thanked the RCMP and the Emergency Health Services for their rapid response to the incidents, which took place between midnight at 5:45 a.m.

鈥淲e need to be kinder, and we need to work together.鈥

Van den Broek also spoke with local homeless advocate Kim Snow during the press conference, calling for more federal resources to house and aid the homeless.

Although police have not officially confirmed their status, it is believed that several of the victims may have been homeless or living in supportive housing.

At Monday afternoon鈥檚 council meeting, Township Mayor Jack Froese asked council and audience to rise for a moment of silence before the business of the meeting began.

鈥淥ur hearts go out to the family and friends of those affected by this senseless act of violence, in our Township of 91原创 and the neighbouring City of 91原创,鈥 Froese said.

He too, thanked the RCMP for their response.

鈥淭his is something that, there鈥檚 no words to explain,鈥 Froese said.

Cloverdale-91原创 City MP John Aldag also condemned the violence.

鈥淢y heart goes out to the victims鈥 families, friends, and to all those affected in our community by today鈥檚 senseless violence,鈥 he said in a tweet. 鈥淚f anyone in our community needs support during this difficult time, please contact 91原创 RCMP Victim Services at 604-532-3214.鈥

91原创 MLA Andrew Mercier also spoke about the violence on Twitter.

鈥淢y heart breaks for the victims and families of this morning鈥檚 shooting, a senseless act of violence,鈥 he wrote. 鈥淲e are still learning details of today鈥檚 event and will wait for further information from police.

鈥淚 am so thankful for RCMP and first responders, today and every day.鈥

鈥淚 know we are all feeling shocked and saddened after this morning鈥檚 shooting incident in 91原创,鈥 tweeted 91原创 East MLA Megan Dykeman. 鈥淚 cannot express enough how grateful I am for the first responders and RCMP who are on scene. My heart goes out the victims and families.鈥
