Memorial grows for Maple Ridge shooting victim

Dozens of flowers, photographs, mark the area the victim was found dead

Dozens of photographs, a hockey stick, an Oilers flag, and more than 50 bouquets of flowers, now decorate a fence in east Maple Ridge, where a young man was found dead last week.

Family and friends of the young man, estimated to be in his mid-20's, have been dropping by the memorial at the corner of 240 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. It's where first responders discovered the local man deceased inside a Honda Civic in the early morning hours of Aug. 13.

One card left at the scene identified the man as Austin, saying they will be so missed.

Another card left on a bouquet said, "Condolences my friend. Taken too soon. Gone to heaven."

"I will hold you in my heart for eternity," said yet another signed Momma G.

Madison wrote, "The love everyone carries for you is so large and unwavering. I wish I could take all their pain away. I will never forget you and our time shared. The hole that is left from you is so large it could never by filled. Tyson will be so sad to see you hurt. I know you are both being loud together now. Love and miss you 4ever."

At 12:22 a.m. on Aug. 13, the Ridge Meadows RCMP, paramedics, and fire crews responded to the call of a shooting victim inside a vehicle. Police said the victim was unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wounds.

A black car at the service station had the front, passenger side window broken, and what appeared to be a bullet hole in the windshield. The vehicle was towed from the scene at approximately 8 a.m.

The shooting occurred nearby, in the area of 246 Street and 124th Avenue, said Const. Tisha Parsons, with Ridge Meadows RCMP.

Ridge Meadows RCMP and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) are still in the earliest stages of the investigation.

Police have yet to release more details about the case.

Anyone with information regarding this case can call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Additionally, if anyone has dash camera or CCTV from either area, they are asked to contact IHIT.
