Police are looking for more witnesses and dash-camera video to help them determine exactly what led to a collision between a motorcycle and a SUV near the BC Ferries terminal in Delta over the weekend.
According to BC Highway Patrol, at about 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, a black Harley Davidson with a dark green Toyota SUV on Highway 17 at Tsawwassen Drive. A second SUV, a grey Honda, was also damaged by debris from the initial crash.
鈥淭he minutes leading up to the collision, and the moments before the collision, are crucially important to the investigation,鈥 Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol said in a press release Monday. 鈥淚f you were in the area and saw these vehicles, or have dash camera footage, you could really help police by sharing what you saw.鈥
The crash closed the highway between Salish Sea Drive and Tsawwassen Drive while Delta police rerouted ferry-bound traffic and asked other motorists to avoid the area. All lanes of Highway 17 reopened to traffic around 6 p.m.
Police say the motorcyclist, a 37-year-old man from Port Alberni, is expected to survive but may have life-altering injuries. Nobody else was hurt in the collision, and all drivers involved in the crash stayed on scene and have been co-operative with investigators.
