Dear Editor,

It was early February, as I recall, in 1981 after American hostages at the U.S, embassy in Iran were released... thanks in large part to Canadian diplomat Ken Taylor.

I was employed as a broadcaster covering the Victoria Cougars at a hockey game against the Portland Winter Hawks at the Rose Garden in Portland. A thrilling moment popped up almost immediately when a near full house rose and gave a rousing standing ovation to the Canadian national anthem! What an honour for Canadians.

Fast forward 44 years to Saturday Feb. 1 – the day the U.S. president unleashed a trade war with Canada – packed arenas in Ottawa (our nation's capital) and Calgary, Alta., unleashed a torrent of boos on the playing of the American national anthem.

Very sad commentary on the state of North American society today.

Jim Leith, Murrayville
