Editor: I agree with Shelley Francis and her letter regarding There is absolutely no consistency in the designation of speed limits in school zones in the Township of 91原创.

How is it that Otter Elementary school, on 248 Avenue, just north of the mayor鈥檚 place of business, has a reduced speed zone of 30 km/h, a flashing light for vehicles heading north on 248 to let them know if they are in excess of 30 km/h, and little plastic figures on either side of the crosswalk, and a safety cone in the middle of the crosswalk on 248?

There is also reduced speed zone of 30 km/h on 54 Avenue, a side street of the school.

Yes, Otter Elementary school is on a truck route, and yes, there is fencing around the school and playground. Now, Topham Elementary and Ecole des Voyageurs are both on a truck route and yes, their school yards are fenced.

However, it would seem that the students of Topham and Ecole des Voyageurs are not afforded the safety features given to those students at Otter Elementary. In fact the vehicle speeds on 216 Street, north of 88 Avenue are significantly increased with the incline of the road.

Traffic calming measures, such as posted 30 km/h signs and flashing signs installed on trucks routes to indicate speeds over 30 km/h are a must if we are to protect our children. There has to be standardization of speed limits on roads adjacent to all schools.

Our mayor was quoted in an article by the 91原创 Times, on the same day, saying that, 鈥淲e are in the business of building complete communities鈥�.we need to look to the future, not to the past.鈥�

Council needs to look to the future and stand up for the safety and rights of its 鈥渇uture citizens.鈥�
