After a slow start to the season, the 91原创 Griffins picked up momentum and finished things off by capturing the 91原创 Cup for the atom division.
鈥淭hey just grew as a team all season long,鈥� said coach Darcy Frederick.
鈥淲e finished off playing our best hockey and the scores are reflective of that.鈥�
The Griffins capped things off with a 7-1 victory over the 91原创 Blades in the championship final on March 30 at the George Preston Recreation Centre.
In the Griffins鈥� three other games in the annual Cup tournament, they won 5-2, 7-2 and 5-1.
The Blades had lost their first game of the double knockout tournament but reeled off three straight win-or-go home games to advance to the finals before running into a Griffens squad that has been on fire for the latter half of the season.
鈥淲e started off a little bit slow but we have played well the rest of the season,鈥� Frederick said.
The Griffins won the regular season banner after prevailing in a tiebreaker game and then went undefeated in the playoff round to capture the Fraser Valley West banner.
They carried that momentum into the 91原创 Cup, steamrolling their opponents by a combined score of 24-6.
鈥淲e like to play an uptempo style and rely on teamwork,鈥� Frederick said.
鈥淓veryone has a role and a responsibility.鈥�
The Griffins also won a tournament on the Sunshine Coast back in January and finished the season with a record of 30-5-5.
